Galvanometers have been essential for the development of science and technology in many fields, for example, they were were essential to discovering the electrical activity of the heart and brain. A galvanometer, an electromechanical instrument measuring electric current, works by moving a needle in response to an electric current flowing through a coil in a constant magnetic field. To protect the measuring system against the Earth's magnetic field, armor in the form of a soft iron sphere and two half circle magnets were placed above the coils.
